As we head into winter, it is important to think about our diet so that the winter blues don’t creep in. Staying healthy in later life is vital and can be greatly enhanced by a good diet.

 We spoke with our award winning chef to get the best foods to boost your mood

Dark Chocolate

While many of us have a sweet tooth, chocolate can often be something we turn to when we are feeling a bit blue. Dark Chocolate can often be overlooked, but with a high volume of antioxidants, it can also release the same endorphins released after exercise. Ensure you get over 70% dark chocolate to get the best benefit, and obviously eat as part of a healthy diet to make sure you are not consuming too much sure though!


High in Omega 3, this is a super source for vital fats which release happy hormones such as dopamine and serotonin. If salmon doesn’t float your boat, there are lots of oily fish which still contain these mood-boosting properties. Incorporate into your diet once or twice a week to keep you healthy this winter.


Full of folate, this Vitamin B rich superfood boosts your brain to produce super serotonin levels reducing depression and anxiety and regulating your mood. When combined with Vitamin C rich foods, this gives the ultimate absorption so top off with a lemon dressing or follow with a nice juicy satsuma for maximum happy levels!


When consumed in moderation, nuts can be a vital part of a healthy diet. Pack with protein, fibre and healthy fats, these are a great snack due to their high Vitamin B levels and healthy fats which provide you with a happy hormone much like salmon and spinach. Just avoid the salted variety to ensure maximum goodness!

Probiotic and Fermented foods

The gut is essential to good health as it boosts an array of bodily functions including the immune system and overall health. By combining fermented foods such as kefir, kimchi and sauerkraut or probiotic foods, this can feed your gut aiding in healthy digestion, happy minds and super immune systems.
